Basements too... Carefully look for those same saw dust piles on floors, windows and window sills along with the top of the foundation where the joists sit on the sills of the house. These are a few of the most desirable places for ants and termites. This is a very simple and quick way to catch potential problems while they are still managable and can be delt with easily. You may have to call a qualified professional, but when caught early, may keep any cost of repairs to a minimum.
Identify Wood Rot
Check all tops and corners of exterior window sills along with all wood //trim that is near to or is in contact with the ground. Poke the wood in question with your finger or a screwdriver to see if it is spongy, mushy, soggy to the touch or if holes are made easily, This is most likely "rotten wood! " It's time to address it or at least put it on your "TO-DO" List.

You should begin by taking a good look around your property. Using the check list we have begun below as a starting point for areas you want to keep an eye on.
Initial Inspection Outside:
It's a good idea to have all your plantings far enough away from the house so that you can walk behind them and veiw the house. This helps protect your exterior from moisture issues such as mildew, wood rot, termites, peeling paint etc... Other forms of water problems may be avoided by cleaning gutters and down spouts annually and being sure downspouts are draining away from the foundation of your house. Extentions for these down spouts may be needed in order for water to drain at least 3 feet away from the foundation.
Spray for ants!
Look carefully around the perimeter of your foundation for signs of ants and termites. These signs may be sawdust, mud trails going up the foundation,or visible clusters of the insects themselves. Be vigilant they have all day! Look for bees nests too. Nests may be on soffits. under gutters, overhangs etc... My experience has been that water problems turn into insect problems, or worse... structual damage problems... Then you'll definitely need me!!! But, If caught early you can save time and money and GAIN peace of mind.
